Fall 2009: ALI awarded HUD/HSIAC grant

2009 HUD award to Woodbury’s Arid Lands Institute: Design Assistance for Water- and Energy-Wise Communities 

A major grant from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development has been awarded to ALI for the funding period Fall 2009-Fall 2012. The award supports the educational offerings at the core of ALI’s mission: design and planning assistance for communities in the rural and urban west working to meet the demands of a growing population in the face of water scarcity, hydrologic variability, and climate change in arid and semi-arid environments. The $600,000 grant, entitled "Planning + Design Assistance for Water- and Energy-Wise Communities," will fund three years of collaborations with community partners in both urban California and rural New Mexico. In addition to HUD funds, ALI’s partners have pledged over $100,000 in donated technical assistance from planners, engineers, and water commissioners. Specifically, Woodbury’s Arid Lands Institute (ALI) will lead a faculty and student effort to: (1) implement a public education program on water/energy conservation; (2) provide water/energy planning and design solutions for the built environments of local communities; and (3) create web-based and print public education materials on water and energy issues.
