At the start of the University of Kansas's 2014 winter term, Paola Sanguinetti of Architecture, Andrea Herstowski of Design, and Stacey White of Urban Planning brought together 100 students and 20 faculty for an All-School Water Charette. Students worked in teams to propose low-carbon water systems for the KU campus. The 3-day event launched with a keynote from ALI, Five Big Design Challenges for the Anthropocene. ALI joined panelists Ward Lyles and Steven Padget for a roundtable and progress review, and final presentations included an impressive array of architectural, landscape and product design proposals. As part of an ALI whistle-stop tour of schools around the (frigid) west, it was great to see KU, Kansas State, and Montana State showing such strong water leadership in their design programs. Even if it never got above 10 degrees Farehneit.
